May 25, 2021 The Working Committee met and discussed the last sharing out session with all districts. A lesson template was reviewed and will be sent to all the teachers who used the books this year. These lesson templates will be added to the website so that they can be shared out with all teachers.
It was decided that all participating teachers will receive a copy of the newly revised Sto:lo Plants Guide as a thank you gift for participating in this project. A copy will be given to the working committee too.
We are hoping to post 6 videos that were samplers at our sharing out sessions. They are currently being edited and will be posted on the lesson idea page as soon as they are available.
The grant carries on into next year. At our Working Committee Meeting, we will decide how to carry this work forward.
May 4, 2021 All participating school teams are coming to together to share out their learning. This is the second sharing session we have had to date this school year. Participants will be asked to complete a sort summary of their learning. The planning team will consolidate this information and report out on teachers' findings.
Overall, the response to the sharing sessions has been very positive. There are lots of questions about making these resources available in a digital format but at this time, that is not a consideration. More information about further steps will be posted after the planning groups meet for a final session near the middle of May.
May 22, 2020 The East Zone met virtually on Zoom. A detailed copy of the meetings notes can be downloaded here: click here to download meeting notes.
March 5, 2020 Zone one met yesterday. It was such an amazing session. We had teachers from 6 districts in attendance. Cheryl Gabriel started us off with good words and the language students at Fort Langley Elementary welcomed us with two beautiful songs. The fact that each of these students can introduce themselves in the language is so powerful. I remember hearing once, that when we speak our languages, the ancestors hear our words.
Teachers, you can download the worksheet that Jessica shared with us from our resource page. We listened and watched Th'owxeya, the Cannibal Woman, by Gwen Point. Then we listened to Jessica read the version, Mosquito Story by Dolly Felix. We talked about how the core of the stories are both very similar. We talked in length about how these stories came to be published and how it was decided which version of the story would be shared in the kits.
Teachers left with one copy of each of the stories. They are asked to try out one of these stories in their classrooms and report back to us on how it all went. Lots of ideas on how to use these stories were generated during a brainstorming session. It was exciting to see such a wide range of teachers as this workshop so hopefully we will be able to share lessons for each of the stories for grades K-12.
Images we made during a re-telling of the Mosquito story.
Feb 27, 2020 Invitations have been sent to teachers in Zone 1. First meeting date is scheduled for Wednesday, March 4 at Fort Langley Elementary School
Dr. Jo-ann Archibald Q’um Q’um Xiiem and Jessica Knott will provide an introduction to the resources and will walk teachers through some activities related to one or two of the stories. Teachers will get a copy of 8 stories and will be asked to use them in their classroom.
